HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS

The Department of Mathematics originated along with the birth of Utkal Christian College (later renamed as Christ College) in 1944 and since then it has remained an integral part of the glorious history of this institution of learning. Prof. M.N. Roy, who has the distinction of bagging double Gold Medals from the University of Dhaka was one of the selected teachers who was instrumental in infusing vigour and meaning to this citadel of learning. Prof M.N. Roy was Principal of the College from 1966 to 1970. He was followed in succession by Prof. S.S. Sharma, a gold medallist of Banaras Hindu University who joined this college on dt. 12.07. 1960 and was HOD from 01.05.1982 to 30.11.1999. Prof S.S. Sharma was Principal from 1990 to 1992. Prof. GangadharNayak joined the department on dt.22.07.1966 and was HOD from 01.12.1999 to 31.01.2002. Prof. S. Rao joined the department on dt. 03.08.1966 and retired on dt. 30.11.1997. Prof. Prafulla Kumar Sahoo joined the department on dt. 31.07.1982 and was HOD from 31.01.2002 to 28.02.2018.

From 1994 to 1947 the college functioned from Christ Collegiate School in Mission Road. In 1948, the college shifted to its own building at ChandiChhak. Till 2003 the Department of Mathematics operated from the general staff room, though the practical at honours level had been introduced from 1991. The use of computers in honourspracticals has been introduced since 2002.

For this new feature in +3 Honours, it was essential for the department to have its separate department attached with a mathematical practical lab. So the authority of this college made separate arrangements for the department in the first floor of the Administrative Block in 2003. In 2004 the computer was complete lab with six numbers of computers in which the first batch of Mathematics (Honours) students appeared their practical examination by running computer programming along with their print out. Now, the number of computers in the lab has increased to 16 for honours students. Original MATLAB software is installed in our lab for honours students as per the new syllabus of CBCS pattern in Utkal University. The department imparts teaching to both Arts and Science students at +2 and +3 level.

Information Technology (I.T.), which is a fourth optional subject at +2 level and a compulsory paper for +3 2nd year students of traditional pattern, started functioning under this department. In 2005, the department was renamed as "Department of Mathematics & IT". As the above infrastructure was available in our department, the authority introduced the Computer Application Course (Self Financing) in the year 2005. In the year 2012, the Department of IT and Comp. Sc. bifurcated from our department.

Prof. M.N. Roy Memorial Gold Medal and cash prize was initiated in 2005 for the best two honours students in the university examination.

On the occasion of Diamond Jubilee Celebration of this college and NAAC Peer Team visit, the department library was established in 2004. The department posseses one overhead projector, Mathematical Models, Mathematical Charts, Photo Gallery of Eminent Mathematicians and internet facility.
