DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY : AN ACCOUNT

In the early forties of the 20th century a group of people from the Christian community of Cuttack, with a noble attitude and a mission to provide value based quality education to students of all sections of the society with particular emphasis on students belonging to economically weaker and cultural disadvantaged sections of the society established an educational institution named Utkal Christian College in the year 1944. The college in its infancy, was housed in a school called Christ Collegiate School at Mission Road. In 1948, the college, built its own building and was given a new name - Christ College. The piece of land where the college is situated, with innumerable mango and other trees reminds the inhabitants of Cuttack of the "Old Gurukul" of Indian educational heritage.

In the meantime for 26 long years students were given education in humanities. The authority felt the necessity of imparting education in science to the students.In Cuttack there were only one or two colleges where science subjects were taught and a major portion of students did not get an opportunity to study science. So, in 1960-61 science was introduced with only Physics and Chemistry subjects. A year later Biology was introduced as one department with two teachers- Sri M.E. Prabhakar, Lecturer and HOD and Sri PremanandaMohanty, Lecturerin Botany. In 1962-63 pre professional courses started.

During 1967-68, full-fledged degree course was introduced in the science departments and the college earned the status of Degree college in science. During the same academic session, the Biology Department was bifurcated into Zoology and Botany Departments with Sri M.E. Prabhakar and Sri PremanandaMohanty as HODs respectively.

In 1969 Sri M.E. Prabhakar resigned from his service preferring a better opportunity elsewhere and Sri Prasanta Kumar Mishra became the HOD in Zoology. Initially the infrastructure of the Department of Zoology consisted of a staff room, a laboratory for the intermediate students and a preparation room. After the introduction of the degree courses, the Zoology Department was extended to a portion of the newly constructed building providing BSc laboratory, seminar room, preparation room and store room.

In 1975, the International Women's Year, girl students were allowed to take admission along with the boys and the college became a co-education college. In 1978-79 one more feather was added to the cap of Christ College i.e., Honours was introduced in Zoology with 16 seats. In 2003 the old asbestos roof of I.Sc. laboratory was replaced with a permanent RCC roof. Again in 2004 construction work ofthe 1st floor of B.Sc. Botany and Zoology Block was completed. The Zoology Department was allotted a B.Sc. Laboratory, a seminar room and a preparation room. At present Zoology Department is facilitated with three laboratories, one for +2, one for +3 Honours and one for +3 elective classes.

During this Platinum Jubilee year, two new smart classrooms named as I.J. Jachuck Memorial ZLT 1 and ZLT 2 have been added to the infrastructure of the Zoology department. The college has affiliation for 384 students in +2, 80 students in +3 degree with 40 seats in honours. Presently there are 7 lecturers, 3 laboratory assistants, 1storekeeper and 5 laboratory attendants who are engaged in teaching the subject and smooth management of the department.

This department is imparting both theory and practical teaching in the most modern, digitalised and updated manner and is well facilitated with an excellent museum of its own containing more than five hundred museum
